Enhanced subtitling practice: Translating the audiovisual experience

Subtitles do more than translate dialogue. In this practical online course, you'll explore innovative approaches to subtitling that consider the full audiovisual experience, including visual and auditory elements that contribute to meaning. Guided by leading researcher Dr Sara Ramos Pinto, you'll examine current subtitling practice, engage with the latest research, and develop strategies for creating more effective, audience-focused subtitles.

Who is the course for?

  • Subtitlers and audiovisual translators looking to expand their skills and services
  • Students and professionals seeking practical training in advanced media localisation
  • Content creators and producers interested in delivering high-quality subtitles for international audiences
  • Anyone who sees subtitling as a creative and audience-focused craft.

What previous knowledge do you need?

The course is relevant regardless of the language pair you work with. Beginners can complete the course, although additional practice with subtitling tools and timing conventions is recommended before offering enhanced subtitling services professionally.

How is the course organised?

The course consists of four learning units and one assessment unit, requiring approximately 8 to 10 hours of study. Content is delivered through short video tutorials and practical exercises that can be completed at your own pace.

All learning is online and asynchronous, allowing you to fit study around your schedule. Optional tutor sessions provide opportunities to ask questions and discuss specific topics.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

  • Create subtitles that take account of visual, auditory and linguistic meaning, not just dialogue.
  • Apply the latest research and industry thinking to produce more effective subtitles for global audiences.
  • Integrate subtitles more effectively within different visual compositions and viewing experiences.
  • Develop strategies for translating culturally significant visual and audio information.
  • Offer enhanced subtitling services that help differentiate your work from AI-generated alternatives.
  • Communicate the value of high-quality human subtitling to clients, content creators and producers.

The course is led by Dr Sara Ramos Pinto, Associate Professor in Translation Studies at the University of Leeds. An expert in audiovisual translation, Sara's research explores how subtitles shape audience experiences and how innovative approaches can make audiovisual content more accessible and engaging.

She developed the Enhanced Subtitling approach in collaboration with film director Fernando Vendrell, combining linguistic, visual and audio elements to create richer viewing experiences.
