Working Creatively in Mental Health Practice: Experiential Tools to Enhance Relational Depth with Clients

Explore how creative and experiential approaches can enrich therapeutic, educational and wellbeing practice. Grounded in relational and humanistic principles, this interactive online course introduces arts-based, imagery and embodied approaches that can support deeper connection, emotional understanding and reflection. Through a combination of theory, live demonstration and practical exercises, participants will develop simple, accessible tools that can be applied within their own professional roles.

What previous knowledge do you need?

The course is suitable for professionals and students working in helping, education, health or wellbeing settings. No previous experience of creative approaches is specified; however, an interest in relational practice and supporting others will help participants gain the most from the course.

How is the course organised?

The course consists of 12 hours of online learning delivered over four consecutive weeks. Participants will attend a three-hour live session each week via Microsoft Teams. Sessions combine theory, live demonstrations, experiential exercises and small-group discussion, creating opportunities to practise techniques and reflect on their application in professional settings.

Dr Netalie Shloim

Dr Netalie Shloim is an Associate Professor in Counselling and Psychotherapy at the University of Leeds, with extensive experience in clinical practice, teaching and professional training.

With an MA in Psychodrama, Netalie brings a creative and experiential dimension to her work, drawing on action-based methods, role exploration and embodied approaches to deepen emotional understanding and therapeutic connection. Her work is grounded in relational and humanistic approaches. She is passionate about integrating theory, research and experiential learning to support practitioners in developing creative, reflective and compassionate ways of working.
