Essentials of Textile Dyeing

Develop the technical knowledge to make smarter, more sustainable textile dyeing and colour decisions across the fashion and apparel industry.

Textile dyeing is an essential process that influences the appearance, performance, quality, cost, and sustainability of fabrics. Whether you're working in fashion, apparel, or textiles, understanding how fabrics are dyed supports better commercial, technical, and sustainability decision-making.

This course provides a practical introduction to textile dyeing processes, fibre coloration, dye classes, textile preparation, and quality assessment. You’ll learn how different fibres respond to dyes, how colour impacts production outcomes, and how to communicate more confidently with suppliers, manufacturers, and product teams.

What does the course cover?

  • The fundamental principles, processes, and methods of textile dyeing and coloration.
  • How fibre composition influences dye uptake, colour performance, and dye selection.
  • The key dye classes used for natural and synthetic fibres.
  • How textile preparation and processing affect dyeing quality and consistency.
  • The relationship between dyeing decisions, production costs, lead times, and sustainability.
  • The importance of colour fastness testing and quality assessment in textile production.
  • Key considerations for maintaining colour consistency and meeting industry standards.

What skills will you gain?

  • A strong understanding of textile dyeing processes and their role within apparel and textile manufacturing.
  • The ability to evaluate coloration decisions based on fibre type, product requirements, cost, sustainability, and production efficiency.
  • Greater confidence in selecting suitable dyeing methods and understanding colour outcomes.
  • Improved technical communication skills when working with suppliers, manufacturers, and product development teams.
  • Knowledge of sustainable textile coloration practices and current industry challenges.
  • Practical skills to support better sourcing, product development, and quality decisions.

How is the course organised?

  • No prior knowledge is required. This course is suitable for beginners and professionals wishing to refresh or expand their technical understanding.
  • Fashion and textile professionals seeking a deeper understanding of textile dyeing and coloration processes.
  • Fashion buyers, designers, garment technologists, and product developers involved in fabric and colour decisions.
  • Quality assurance, sourcing, and sustainability teams responsible for product consistency and responsible manufacturing.
  • Industry newcomers looking to build technical textile knowledge and strengthen their career opportunities.

While not essential, we recommend learners begin with our Fundamentals of Textile Fibres course to build foundational knowledge of fibre types and material properties.
